From Conflict to Understanding: The Power of Empathy in the Parent- Child Relationship

The parent group titled “From Conflict to Understanding: The Power of Empathy in the Parent-Child Repationship” was successfully held at the 6 the Primary School of Livadia.

The meeting was experiential in nature. Rather than adhering to a strictly theoretical format, the presentation used the slides as a point of departure for reflection, dialogue, and genuine exchange of lived experience. Practical insights were offered into the dynamics of anger – what underlies emotional outbursts- as well as the significance of active listening. Within each thematic area, parents were encouraged to bring forward their own experiences, challenges and questions that emerge in everyday life.

A central focus of the group was the recognition of a shared reality: most parents already know, in theory, what they “should do”. However, in practice, fatigue, tension and emotional strain often make it difficult to apply this knowledge.

Having said that, we explored ways in which parents can respond with consistency, understanding and clear boundaries, in order to support their children in making sense of their behaviour, while also strengthening the parent-child relationship. The meeting highlighted with honesty, the transition from theory to practice, creating a space ground in understanding rather than judgment.

The aim of this workshop was to provide information, encourage the sharing of common experiences, offer relief and empower parents. The active participation and openness of the members affirmed the need for such spaced- where parenting is approached with realism, empathy and respect.
