First Aid Education: It starts with the Parent

I was delighted to take on the role of reviewing and refining the linguistic and developmental suitability of the children’s book “Little Rescuers and First Aid” by George Koutsikos, which presents first aid concepts through stories designed for young readers. The aim was to ensure that the content is clear, developmentally appropriate, and psychologically attuned -informative without being alarming.

The book was presented at the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Livadia, where I had the opportunity to address parents on the importance of their own preparedness as a foundational step. Before introducing children to first aid, it is essential to acknowledge and work through the fear and uncertainty that often accompany the subject for adults.

We explored how the fear of responsibility in emergency situations can lead to avoidance, as well as how knowledge can reduce anxiety and strengthen a sense of competence and readiness.

Parents are a child’s first mirror. Their knowledge and composure do more thatn convey information as they communicate a sense of safety. Safety is the foundation of all meaningful learning. Practical guidance was also offered on adapting language to a child’s developmental stage, along with ideas for role- play activities at home, through which learning becomes experiential.

The audience responded warmly, with active and meaningful participation.

I would like to warmly thank Giorgos Koutsikos, the Director of STOP HEART ATTACK, for his trust and collaboration in this important action.
